[MD1] Roaster Licenses ObjectSpace Voyager

Roaster Technologies Licenses ObjectSpace Voyager(TM) As Primary Java
Interface For Distributed Computing

-- mobile agents with CORBA and DCOM communication provide customers core
development infrastructure for distributed Java applications--

Cambridge, MA - December 1, 1997 - Roaster Technologies today announced
that it has licensed ObjectSpace Voyager(TM), the Agent ORB for Java from
ObjectSpace, Inc., as the core Java interface for distributed programming
using the Roaster Technologies Java development environments. Roaster
Technologies will include ObjectSpace Voyager in its Roaster Enterprise(TM)
and Roaster Data Edition(TM) products and extend its development
environments to allow customers to build distributed applications quickly,
easily, and with great power and flexibility.

"We selected ObjectSpace Voyager as the primary vehicle for delivering
multi-tiered, distributed Java applications with Roaster Enterprise because
of its diversity and ease of use," said John Dhabolt, President/CEO of
Roaster Technologies. "You can't help but be impressed when you review this
technology. There is really nothing like it out there today."

In Q2 of 1998, Roaster Technologies plans to ship the first versions of
Roaster products containing Voyager version 2.0. This version provides
complete bidirectional support for CORBA. With a single button, customers
can use the Roaster development environment to enable CORBA communication
and automatically create CORBA IDL specifications for any existing Java
class, even without access to the classes source code. This capability is
not possible with any other available Object Request Broker (ORB) on the
market today. Customers can process existing IDL for CORBA services and
automatically create Java interfaces, then use these interfaces to
communicate with them using natural Java language syntax.

Roaster Technologies plans to add advanced wizards to Roaster Enterprise to
facilitate the creation of ObjectSpace Voyager agents. These wizards will
allow users to automate complex programming tasks with simple point and
click interfaces.

"We are very pleased to see the wholehearted adoption of Voyager by Roaster
Technologies," said David Norris, President/CEO of ObjectSpace, Inc. . "The
combination of our products will allow Roaster Technologies to deliver
unprecedented 100% Java functionality to its users."

About ObjectSpace Voyager

As with the Roaster development environments, ObjectSpace Voyager is
written 100% in Java. It provides the ability for programmers to create and
use objects on remote systems as if those objects were in the same Java
virtual machine. It also provides advanced features such as mobile objects,
autonomous agents, group communications, seamless object persistence, and
dynamic integration with CORBA today and DCOM in 1998.

ObjectSpace Voyager version 3.0, scheduled for release in mid-1998, will
allow the seamless support of DCOM communications using the Microsoft
distributed COM architecture. This version will be subsequently bundled
into Roaster products. Roaster customers will take comfort knowing that the
code they write once can be used remotely without modification by Voyager,
CORBA, and DCOM clients, protecting their development investment in the
ongoing struggle for market leadership between CORBA and Microsoft DCOM.

"Voyager allows us to provide our customers push button remote access to
any Java class, as well as any CORBA or DCOM service," said Richard Cook,
VP of Engineering for Roaster Technologies. "The best part is that the code
our customers write is the same regardless of how the remote object is
implemented. This is simply not possible with other distributed computing
technology on the market today."

Unlike other distributed platforms, Voyager uses the Java object model as
its API. This reduces learning curves, minimizes maintenance, and, most
importantly, speeds time to market for new advanced distributed systems.
When used in conjunction with JGL, the Generic Collections for Java, also
included in the Roaster product line, customers can create, access, move,
and manipulate collections of objects on remote systems with no additional
programming.

Voyager's architecture extends the traditional distributed object features
to include seamless support for mobile objects and autonomous agents. These
advanced distributed computing features allow Roaster developers to build
mobile capabilities into their applications with much less programming than
older traditional approaches. Computing problems such as software
distribution, optimized resource utilization, and distributed workflow are
greatly simplified.
