SYMANTEC ANNOUNCES CAFE 1.5 FOR MACINTOSH JAVA(tm) DEVELOPMENT ENVIRONMENT

CUPERTINO, Calif. - March 24, 1997 - Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq:SYMC),
the leading supplier of Java development tools and environments, today
announced Symantec Caf&eacute 1.5 for Macintosh. An upgrade to Symantec's
best-selling Java toolset, Caf&eacute 1.5 now offers the richest
feature-set available for Macintosh Java development, including an enhanced
debugger, new just-in-time compiler for faster applet and application
performance, new recursive compiler for faster builds, integration of JDK
1.02, and the inclusion of the MacOS Runtime for Java.

As with its entire spectrum of development tools, Symantec is making good
on its commitment to the Macintosh development community by delivering the
most complete set Java development tools, which includes Caf&eacute, Visual
Caf&eacute (Rapid Application Development environment for Java) and Visual
Page (WYSIWYG HTML authoring tool). Netscape recently pledged its support
for the Symantec approach with their recently announced partnership to
license the Symantec Just-in-Time compiler for the Macintosh.

"Macintosh developers asked us for faster Java performance on the Mac, more
powerful debugging and development tools and we've responded with the
Caf&eacute 1.5 upgrade. Symantec is well aware that a large percentage of
Web development takes place on the Macintosh platform, and we intend to
take that arena seriously," said Mansour Safai, general manager of
Symantec's Internet Tools division. "We're pleased to be upgrading
Caf&eacute for Macintosh, because it means Macintosh developers can share
the advantages of the latest Java development technologies."

Enhancements in version 1.5 of Symantec Caf&eacute for Macintosh include:

the setting of breakpoints in executing code

Symantec Caf&eacute 1.5 is now available in the standard retail channel and
on Symantec's Web site (http://cafe.symantec.com) for an estimated retail
price of US $79.95. Existing Caf&eacute for Macintosh customers can upgrade
to Caf&eacute 1.5 for Macintosh free through the cafe.symantec.com Web site
or purchase a shrink-wrapped version for $19.95 (plus shipping and
