Macsimum Migration Kit: networking utilities for Mac OS X, part two

For those new to the column, Macsimum Migration is our term for companies moving from Wintel machines to Macs -- or at least adding or increasing the number of Macs they use. A Migration Kit is an overview of Mac OS products for a particular occupation, such as dentistry, accounting, etc.) This week we offer part two of our networking utilities for the Mac. IPObserver

IPObserver (http://www.leicht.info/freeware.0.html) lets you observe your assigned IP address, even behind a Internet router. With it you can send a new address to people by email. Also, IPObserver will check for open ports outside your IP address.

IServeBox

iServeBox (http://www.hanynet.com/iservebox/index.html) is a UNIX network services manager.

iStumber

iStumbler (http://www.istumbler.net/) is a software tool for locating wireless networks and Bluetooth devices.

Kasumi Dempa

Kasumi Dempa (http://tsbps.com/product/kasumidempa/) is software that indicates microwave for wireless LAN; it enables the user to know details of each LAN connection and be able to connect to them.

Lighthouse

Lighthouse (http://codelaide.com/blog/products) is a dynamic port forwarding utility, allowing you to enable and disable port forwardings with just a single click. Both NAT/PMP (Apple Airport base stations) and UPnP (D-Link, Linksys, Netgear) protocols are supported. Port forwardings are frequently necessary for tools such as instant messengers, file-sharing utilities and other networked applications that are run from behind a NAT gateway (read: a home network router).

Lithium Network Monitoring Platform

The Lithium Network Monitoring Platform (http://lithium5.com/) is an integrated network, server and appliance monitoring and management platform. Designed to provide an end-to-end solution for Mac OS X, Lithium includes automated device monitoring, out-of-the-box support for SNMP and an integrated trouble-ticket case management system.

Little Snitch

Little Snitch (http://www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch/index.html) tells you when a program tries to send info to the internet so you can see what's going on in the background. When an application tries to establish a network connection, Little Snitch intercepts the attempt and brings up an alert panel giving you all the connection details including the name of the application, which initiated the connection. You either choose to allow the connection, to deny it or to add a permanent rule for similar future connections.

Location X

Location X (http://homepage.mac.com/locationmanager/) lets you adjust your Mac for a specific network, time zone, email and more.

Moosepad

MoosePad (http://www.wundermoosen.com/) is an utility configures the built-in Mac OS X firewall in order to block IP addresses found making illegal requests.

MySecureShell

MySecureShell (http://sourceforge.net/projects/mysecureshell/) is a SFTP-server developing tool.

NetSupport Manager

NetSupport Manager (http://www.netsupportmanager.com/) lets you monitor multiple systems in a single action, deliver hands-on remote support or interactive training. With it, you can gather real-time inventory and system data. NetSupport Manager provides the ability to support Mac, Linux, Solaris, Windows and mobile devices all from a single console.

Network Beacon

Network Beacon (http://www.chaoticsoftware.com/) lets you publish services on a computer or to serve as a proxy for services on other computers or devices.

NetworkLocation

NetworkLocation (http://centrix.ca/NetworkLocation/) lets you set your existing network locations in Mac OS X. With a single mouse click, you can set some of the most frequently changed settings you already manually set when you move your computer.

pearPortVPN

pearPortVPN (http://www.pearworks.com/) allows you to automatically establish a specific VPN connection whenever a wireless network of choice becomes available. It can also automatically disconnect any open connections before your Mac falls asleep to prevent an annoying error messages about timed out connections when your Mac wakes up again.

phpCrystal

phyCrystal (http://sourceforge.net/projects/phpchrystal/) is an open source-intranet system designed to be used at LAN parties. The advantages of phpChrystal are its portability, flexibility and performance, since it is completely based on PHP, MySQL and XML.

Pukka

Pukka (http://codesorcery.net/software) is an utility for posting to del.icio.us.

RAR Expander

RAR Expander (http://rarexpander.sourceforge.net/) is a utility for expanding RAR archives.

RDC Menu

RCD Menu (http://www.xutils.com/wp/) adds an icon to your menubar, allowing you access to launch the Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client.

Router IP Address

Router IP Address (http://sonoragraphics.com/routerip.html) is an utility for discovering the dynamic IP address assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) when you have a router connecting several computers to a single internet connection (cable modem, DSL, or telephone modem).
 
SharePoints

SharePoints (http://www.hornware.com/sharepoints/) is an application or a preference pane that lets you add and delete share points like in the old Finder. This program is designed to make it easy to share any folder.

SNMP Status

SNMP Status (http://kunysch.de/) monitors a SNMP device like AirPort routers and displays the traffic of a connected interface in the menubar.

Splunk Server

Splunk Server (http://www.splunk.com/) indexes logs from any source (Apache, Mac OS X, Sendmail, routers). There's no need to configure it for specific formats, writing regular expressions or changing your logging output.

SpuidMan

SquidMan (http://web.me.com/adg/) is an installer and graphical interface for Squid proxy cache.

SSH Tunnel Manager

SSH Tunnel Manager (http://mac.freshmeat.net/projects/tunnelmanager) is a tool to manage SSH Tunnels (commonly invoked with -L and -R arguments in the console). It can set up lots of tunnels, each containing many port redirections.

Thousand Parsec wxPython Client

The Thousand Parsec wxPython Client (http://www.thousandparsec.net/tp/) is a client for the Thousand Parsec framework. The client allows you to connect to any Thousand Parsec server and play a wide variety of turn based space empire building games, such as the demo games MiniSec and MTSec. Thousand Parsec draws ideas from (and should be able to clone) other 4X games such as Stars!, VGA Planets, Master of Orion and Galactic Civilizations.

Toonel.net

Toonel (http://www.toonel.net/) offers a technique to conserve network bandwidth by attempting to compress resources transferred thereby increasing connection throughput. We recommend our solution for those who are paying a fee based on traffic consumption; have monthly download limit or using narrowband connection.

Tunnelblick

Tunnelblick (http://code.google.com/p/tunnelblick/) is a graphical user interface for OpenVPN.

Visual1553

Visual1553 (http://www.linville.org/software.html) is a program to show you the breakout of Mil-Std-1553 command and status words. For the command words it will show you the remote address, the transport mode, the subaddress (or mode if applicable) and the word count (or mode code if applicable). For status words it will show you the remote address and the bit statuses.

Wake550

Wake550 (http://www.tc.umn.edu/~olve0003/fivefifty.html) is an open source tool lets you wake a sleeping computer through a LAN by simply typing its MAC Address in the appropriate dialog box.

WEP Key Maker

WEP Key Maker (http://www.tc.umn.edu/~olve0003/fivefifty.html) generates a hexadecimal key from a pass phrase; key can then be copied from the utility and passed directly to an IEEE 802.11b device.

XGridLite

XGrideLite (http://edbaskerville.com/category/xgridlite/) notifies you by email whenever your IP address changes

ZiskoCalc

ZiskcoCalc (http://wareseeker.com/Business-Finance/ziskocalc-1.62.zip/1f7acd7c7) is a small desktop-toolkit that lets you convert values from many number-systems into others like hex, oct, bin, dec.
